Hackers have attacked Ferrari, gaining access to the company’s systems, including a list of customers with email addresses and phone numbers, according to the Italian carmaker’s statement released Monday evening.

The company stressed that customer payment data is secure and the Maranello-based conglomerate has no intention of giving in to the criminals’ demands.

“We regret to inform you of a cyber incident at Ferrari, where the threat actor was able to access a limited number of systems in our IT environment,” the carmaker reported.

The Italian luxury sports car maker said that after receiving the ransom demand, an investigation was launched in cooperation with a leading global cyber security company. The relevant authorities were also informed.

“We will not accept ransom demands, as agreeing to such demands would fund criminal activity and allow perpetrators to continue their attacks,” the statement added.

Ferrari stressed that the cyber attack has had “no impact on our company’s operations.”

Ferrari attempts to reassure customers.

In an email to customers, chief executive Benedetto Vigna wrote that some customer data had been compromised, including names, addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers.

However, he gave reassurances that “no payment details and/or bank account numbers and/or other sensitive payment information or details of Ferrari cars owned or ordered have been stolen.”

The company’s statement did not mention so-called ransomware, which is software that blocks access to a computer system or prevents data stored on it from being read. It then demands a ransom from the victim to restore the original state.

Gigabytes of data online?

German daily Bild reported rumors in October last year that the cyber gang ‘RansomEXX’ had attacked a Ferrari and put data online. There was talk of seven gigabytes of confidential documents. The company denied that such an attack had taken place.
